  • Overview

    UNF is seeking a continuously inventive, multi-skilled communications team player with excellent judgment, sound knowledge, and an enterprising spirit for the new role of Senior Manager, Public Affairs.

     

    The Senior Manager, Public Affairs plays a crucial frontline role in the Foundation’s working relationships with UN communicators, major communications agencies and partners. In addition s/he also leads on communications activities related to UNF's New York office, including developing and implementing communications plans and creating content. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in UNF’s considerable activities in New York including the Social Good Summit, Global Goals Week, Solutions Summit and in working with UN and other partners to effectively leverage major UN convening moments like the UN General Assembly, High Level Political Forum, ECOSOC Youth Forum and other key engagements. S/he also manages a network of communications agencies, and liaises with corporate partners and influencers.

     

    Part of the Foundation’s integrated communications team that is led from our Washington DC headquarters, this role is based in our New York office, reports to the Senior Director, Communications and Special Initiatives, and manages a communications associate, both also NY-based.

    Working Relationships

    The Senior Manager, Public Affairs (UNF) reports to the Senior Director, Communications and Special Initiatives, and is a member of the Public Affairs team.

    Responsibilities

    • Manages day-to-day working relationships with UN communicators at the mid-senior level in the Secretariat and various UN agencies
    • Works to align UNF communications with UN priorities, including through co-creating campaigns with partners, and enhancing UN campaigns through UNF channels
    • Builds and strengthens relationships with the UN, private and third sector partners, communications agencies, relevant media and others.
    • Plays key role in designing, planning and executing NY-based UNF strategies and activities around major UN moments.
    • Leads on interpreting, conveying and advising on UN communications requests for DC colleagues, in consultation with NYC office leads.
    • Liaises with UNF departments and functions based in New York (such as global policy work and the Business Council for the UN) to integrate content and support their communications strategies.
    • Acts as communications team lead on creating UN-focused and UN-facing communications products.
    • Manages UNF’s signature Communications Corps network that regularly convenes leading communications firms and UN agencies around social good priorities, overseeing community relations, strategic direction and content programming.
    • Supervises full-time communications associate, assigning and guiding work, overseeing quality control, mentoring.
    • Advises on and oversees restructuring of Global Daily, including liaising with colleagues to find alternative outlets for content.
    • Provides strategic counsel on UNF digital, marketing and content strategy, including liaising with key NY-based partners, vendors and media, and connecting UNF colleagues with relevant contacts.

    Selection Criteria

    • Five to seven years of content creation, digital communications and project management
    • Good understanding of geopolitics, international development, the work of the UN and the landscape in which the UN and UNF operate
    • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, including sound judgment in matters of protocol
    • Ability to work with experts, colleagues or alone to turn detailed, technical information into concise, accurate, eye-catching multi-platform content,
    • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously with energy, humor and team spirit
    • Experience working in a collaborative, multi-stakeholder environment essential
    • Experience with communications agencies, private sector and UN system preferred
    • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in English, Communications, Public Relations, International Relations or related field
    • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
