Overview

The Senior Communications Officer, Editorial and Media will play a key role in the Foundation’s Public Affairs operations, spearheading efforts to raise awareness of Foundation issues, work, and leadership with media; building relationships with journalists; and serving as a point of contact for media. This role will also help develop and execute communications plans to advance UN Foundation priorities, develop messaging and media strategies, and produce and pitch content for the UN Foundation, and its campaigns, initiatives, and alliances. The position will support the Public Affairs needs of the Foundation’s leadership and advance the foundation’s editorial strategies, calendar, and content. This is a new position that will work closely with the Senior Communications Officer, Editorial and Writing, and the Communications Officer, under the leadership of the Senior Director, Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively pitching media and op-eds on UN Foundation issues and work
    Handling incoming media inquiries
  • Supports UN Foundation leadership in media interviews
  • Provides strategic advice to UN Foundation leadership and initiatives on media strategy
  • Works with editorial team to develop and execute strategic communications plans to advance UN Foundation priorities
  • Builds and maintains media contact lists
  • Helps organize and manage press briefings with UN Foundation and UN principals
  • Organizes and executes press fellowships
  • Drafts and edits statements, press releases, blog posts, op-eds, speeches, and talking points in support of the Foundation and its leadership
  • Support Foundation communications needs on key issues as needed
  • Works closely with digital team and communications teams of UN Foundation initiatives to support communications needs
  • Participate as an active member of the Public Affairs team. Serve as needed on various projects including the full scope of PR and communications activities.

Selection Criteria

  • Minimum of 6-7 years of experience in communications.
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working with media, including experience and success in pitching media and demonstrated media industry contacts.
  • On-the-record experience preferred.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills and ability to understand communications landscape to create comprehensive communications plans.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage several projects simultaneously and work with teams across an organization.
  • Experience in international affairs and/or public policy preferred.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
  • Sense of humor a plus
